As athletes, we expect our lungs to work without exception and sometimes take for granted the freedom of a clear, healthy breath.
According to the American Lung Association, more than 33 million Americans suffer from chronic lung diseases. While breast cancer gets a lot of press (rightfully so), lung cancer is actually a far greater risk to women and is the #1 cancer killer in the country. Sadly, only 16% of those diagnosed have a 5-year survival rate.
Something else we didn’t know, 2/3 of those diagnosed never smoked or are former smokers.
For more than 100 years, the American Lung Association has fought for clean air and healthy lungs. Through its annual LUNG FORCE Walk, the organization hopes to change misconceptions about lung disease and fund research and advocacy.
illumiNITE supports Rhode Island’s first ever LUNG FORCE walk, scheduled for June 13th in Warwick, RI. With close to 400 participants registered to walk, the event organizers hope to bring some much-needed awareness to this disease.
According our friend Shannon Deegan of the American Lung Association (Providence office), LUNG FORCE has three main priorities:
- To make lung cancer a cause that people care about, and will act on.
- To educate and empower health care providers and patients
- To raise critical funds for lung cancer research
To help meet these goals, mission-themed tents will be set up at the event to engage and educate participants about lung health, and a small cell lung cancer survivor will share her story during the opening ceremony.
The American Lung Association hopes to raise $15million for this cause over the next five years. illumiNITE will help by sending a product donation and recruiting a team for the event – because everyone deserves to breath easy.
