Helping Kids, Inspiring Change – The Katie DeCubellis Memorial Foundation

Each year, illumiNITE has the privilege of supporting the Katie DeCubellis Memorial Foundation’s (KDMF) annual road race. Katie was just 13-years-old when she was killed by a drunk driver. A visionary, mentor, and friend, Katie touched the lives of everyone she met.

A team of dedicated volunteers including Katie’s mom and the head of illumiNITE’s creative team, Meg DeCubellis, run the organization and road race. Now in its 17th year, the road race raises funds to carry on Katie’s legacy through youth leadership programs and education and public awareness of the dangers of drunk driving and substance abuse.

Since its inception, KDMF has awarded more than $300K in scholarships, prizes, and donations to students from Narragansett high school. Recipients exemplify Katie’s qualities of friendship, community service, and academic excellence.   Students interested in apply for next year’s scholarship should visit this page.

In addition to raising money for educational programs, the organization works to save lives by changing drunk driving laws in the State of Rhode Island. KDMF was instrumental in the fight to lower the Rhode Island blood alcohol driving limit to 0.8.

We salute the DeCubellis family for their commitment to protecting and enhancing the lives of young people in Rhode Island. With grace and dignity they make this world a better place for us all.
