Yo, Adrian – A Trip to the Philadelphia Marathon

Yo, Adrian – A Trip to the Philadelphia Marathon

“Yo, Adrian.”

If you’re not familiar with that iconic movie quote, leave right now and go rent Rocky (the original) on Nextflix. I’ll wait…

Wasn’t that amazing?!?

Rocky first opened 41 years ago and it remains a classic (even after all those less-amazing sequels). illumiNITE brings its reflective, performance gear to Rocky’s hometown this weekend with a trip to the Philadelphia Marathon.

The Health & Fitness Expo is open Friday 11/17 from 12pm – 9pm and Saturday 11/18 from 10am -7pm. Sorry, we won’t have any baggy, old, gray, cotton sweatsuits (see Rocky). Instead, we’ll have fun, festive, and warm reflective gear for all of your outdoor winter activities. Find us at the Pennsylvania Convention Center (12th & Arch Street, Hall F) to see what’s new.

Runners who want to “go the distance” in Philadelphia can try the “Rocky Challenge” and run the half marathon on Saturday and the full marathon on Sunday. Like Rocky, that challenge is epic, so in honor of our favorite fictional boxer (and everyone running this weekend), here are a few fun facts about the movie Rocky.

  • Sylvester Stallone wrote the first draft of Rocky in 3 ½ days. Although, the original script changed dramatically over time, including the ending. In the original script, Rocky throws the fight and opens a pet store for Adrian with his winnings.
  • The studio didn’t want the unknown Stallone to star in the movie. Budget constraints made them reconsider and he received $20,000 for the script and $350 per week to act in the movie.
  • In order to fill the audience for the climatic fight scene, producers gave a free chicken dinner to anyone who showed up.
  • Susan Sarandon auditioned for the part of Adrian, but producers thought she was too pretty for the role.
  • Stallone permanently flattened his knuckles shooting the famous meat warehouse scene.
  • The movie’s iconic, “Yo, Adrian,” was voted the #80 movie quote (out of 100) by the American Film Institute. (#1 “Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn.”)
