With cooler days and trees painting the sky with flaming red, orange, and yellow leaves, fall is good time to run a marathon in the Northeast. IllumiNITE is ready for some leaf peeping as we head down the Mass Turnpike to Albany, NY (home of Herman Melville & Aaron Burr) for the Mohawk Hudson River Marathon.
The marathon is small (about 1,000 runners), fun, and flat, so it’s a good option for first-timers. Organized by the Hudson Road Runners Club, the event supports several local charities. All are worthwhile, but a few really caught our eye:
Patriot Hills of New York, Inc. provides community based resources and outreach to returning combat veterans and their families. The organization provides medical, mental health, and therapeutic referral services to help veterans adjust to life at home.
The Animal Support Project is an all-species, all-volunteer animal crisis intervention service. During times of crisis, families are sometimes forced to give a up a beloved pet. The organization provides resources to keep pets and their people together, or finds suitable homes when necessary.
Girls on the Run uses running and other physical activities to teach girls life skills, build confidence, and promote a healthy lifestyle. The training culminates in a 5K event, and the girls participate in community impact projects.
IllumiNITE will be at the race Expo (along with those nonprofits) on Saturday, October 8th from 10:00 am – 6:00 pm. You know what comes next…. We’d love to see you, so stop by our booth at the Hilton on Lodge St., to sample our fall and winter collection. Mention this blog post and win a prize.
